Real Bitcoins for fake banknotes: two arrests in Milan for fraud
They tried to deceive a 22-year-old. When he discovered the scam, he was attacked.

Two people—a 33-year-old Serbian man and a 35-year-old Cuban man—were arrested for attempting to pass off a suitcase full of counterfeit money to a 22-year-old in exchange for Bitcoin. The young man realized the trick just before transferring the Bitcoin to the fake clients' accounts. When he refused to continue the transaction, he was attacked by the two men and a woman who then disappeared.

The incident occurred late yesterday afternoon. The alarm was raised around 7:15 pm by a resident of the building on Viale Abruzzi where the meeting took place. The resident called the police after hearing yelling and a gunshot (which was later revealed to be a blank pistol). Others reported finding a stack of 500-euro counterfeit bills on the sidewalk, part of the fake money used in the scam. When police arrived, they found the 22-year-old victim with a broken nose and facial injuries and the Cuban man with a head injury; both were taken to Fatebenefratelli Hospital—the victim with a 14-day prognosis and the Cuban with 7 days.

The victim explained to the officers that he had been introduced to the two buyers through a Russian friend with whom he often does business. Their first meeting took place some days before in a bar in the Quadrilatero area, where a trial transaction of 7 Bitcoins for 50,000 euros was successfully completed.

Yesterday afternoon, they met again to complete the exchange in an office on Viale Abruzzi rented for about an hour by the Cuban from a company. The scammers brought another 45,000 euros in cash as “bait.” They passed the bills under a lamp to check them, put them into a counting machine, and finally placed them in an envelope.

It was this last step that aroused the suspicion of the 22-year-old, who asked to see all the banknotes. When the group refused, he closed his computer and tried to leave the room but was attacked, and a gunshot was fired to intimidate him. During the chaos, the woman escaped, taking with her the 50,000 euros that had been given to the young man during the initial transaction. The police found the other 45,000 euros in the scammers’ car, which were intended to deceive the victim.
