Three Suspects in Home Invasion Remain in Custody

Antwerp/Hoboken

Three suspects in a brutal home invasion in Hoboken remain in custody. This decision was made by the examining magistrate this morning. The three were after money and also attempted to seize 3 million euros in bitcoins.

Mimoun ‘Mims’ Y. (32) and Mohamed E.A. (22) from Borgerhout were arrested when they attempted to flee the residence on Hertog van Brabantlei in Hoboken on Friday morning. The Rapid Response Team (SRT) was able to apprehend the two, along with several police patrols. Later that evening, a third suspect, a 23-year-old from Borsbeek, was also arrested.

The three appeared before the examining magistrate this morning on suspicion of nighttime theft with violence in a group. The men were after cash, but when they didn't find any, they attempted to empty the digital wallet of the resident. This attempt was unsuccessful.

The resident, a 34-year-old man, had a visit from his 61-year-old mother that morning. The two victims were severely assaulted and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.

“More investigation needed”

The examining magistrate decided to extend the detention of the three suspects by one month. Advocate Koen Vaneecke, representing Mohamed E.A., reacted shortly after the examining magistrate's decision: “My client is suspected of serious offenses. His role and involvement will be further investigated, and in the meantime, he remains in custody. At least, my client has never been convicted before.”

A fourth suspect, a 29-year-old man from Deurne, who was only arrested on Wednesday, will appear before the examining magistrate later.
