Kidnappers of French crypto figure and his wife arrested after massive manhunt
David Balland, co-founder of the Ledger company, was abducted from his home along with his wife on the morning of Tuesday, January 21. They were successfully rescued by law enforcement. Ten people, aged between 20 and 40, were arrested and taken into custody.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau at a press conference after the release of David Balland and his companion in Paris on January 23, 2025.
On the afternoon of Thursday, January 23, a gendarmerie operation in the Paris region targeted two vehicles. Inside were three men and the wife of David Balland, a notable figure in the cryptocurrency sector and co-founder of the Ledger company. The operation marked the conclusion of a 48-hour manhunt for the entrepreneur and his wife who had been rescued by the gendarmerie's GIGN tactical unit just 24 hours prior.
The couple had been abducted in the early hours of Tuesday, January 21, from their home in the town of Méreau in central France, where Ledger's headquarters are located. Forced into two vehicles, the man and woman were separated. The identity of the kidnappers has not been revealed, but 10 people have been taken into custody, the Paris prosecutor's office announced at a press conference on Thursday evening. The hostage-takers were demanding a "substantial cryptocurrency ransom," according to the prosecutors.
The pair wasn't chosen randomly: In 2014, Balland co-founded Ledger, one of the leading companies in France's cryptocurrency sector. Its secure physical wallets, reputed to be particularly robust, are highly prized by investors – the company is valued at around €1.3 billion.
The company's co-founder and former CEO Eric Larchevêque, whom an online rumor had initially identified as the victim of the kidnapping, expressed his "immense relief" on social media Thursday evening after the release of the two victims, and extended his thanks to "the law enforcement agencies, with a special mention for the GIGN."
Ten arrests, 230 gendarmes mobilized
Opened on Tuesday by the Bourges prosecutor's office, then transferred to Paris and its national jurisdiction for the fight against organized crime, the investigation promised to be particularly complex from the outset. To send their ransom demand, sent to another Ledger co-founder, the kidnappers used a WhatsApp account linked to a telephone number in Southeast Asia, as well as a VPN (virtual private network), making them very difficult to track. The investigators decided to send a bitcoin (equivalent to around €100,000) to buy time and try to trace the transaction.
The arrest of a vehicle suspected by the Vierzon anti-criminality brigade gave the investigation a boost. Aboard the vehicle, which had been stolen, a man admitted to being part of the group that kidnapped the Balland couple. His phone was used to trace another phone, geolocated in Châteauroux, central France. When the GIGN intervened at the address where the cell phone was located, they found Balland alive but wounded: furious at not receiving the ransom, his kidnappers had cut off his finger and sent the video of the mutilation to Ledger.
His wife, however, was not at the scene. The search intensified, and a large force of 230 gendarmes, including 91 GIGN agents and specialized technical teams, was deployed. Eventually, by midday on Thursday, her trail was found in the town of Etampes, thanks to a combination of cross-checks. She was in a vehicle, tied up but in good health. The gendarmes arrested six suspects.
Offences punishable by life imprisonment
A total of 10 people, nine men and one woman aged between 20 and 40, were arrested. Most were already known to the police, according to the Paris prosecutor's office. A judicial investigation is due to be opened on Friday, January 24, on charges of kidnapping in an organized gang, accompanied by acts of torture or barbarism and extortion with weapons. These offenses are punishable by life imprisonment.

On December 31, 2024, the father, mother and sister of a French cryptocurrency influencer were kidnapped and held for several hours in eastern France – there too, a ransom was demanded. After the influencer raised the alarm, the gendarmes freed the mother and sister. Her father was found 24 hours after his abduction, 600 kilometers from home. Once again, it was a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle that led to the discovery of the man, who had been tied up, doused with petrol and locked in the boot of a vehicle. No link has yet been established between the two cases.

How crual.

Ledger co-founder released after days in captivity in France: Report

Ledger co-founder David Balland was kidnapped in France and safely released after police intervention. The incident involved a cryptocurrency ransom demand.

David Balland, co-founder of the French cryptocurrency hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger, was released following a harrowing kidnapping incident, according to a statement from the Paris prosecutor’s office cited by Bloomberg.

Balland was abducted from his home in central France during the early hours of Jan. 21. He was held captive until a police operation on the night of Jan. 22 secured his release.

The kidnappers had demanded a ransom in cryptocurrency.

Ledger was established in 2014 by Balland and others. The devices are designed to keep users’ private keys offline, thereby safeguarding digital assets from online vulnerabilities.

The company, which raised 100 million euros ( $109 million) in 2023, now boasts a valuation of 1.3 billion euros ($1.42 billion) and employs about 700 people.

Ledger operates a manufacturing facility in Vierzon, France, where Balland served as site director from 2019 to 2021. Post-release, Balland received medical attention, authorities confirmed.

Ransomware gangs extorted over $1.1 billion in cryptocurrency payments from victims in 2023, according to data from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis.

This came amid widespread rumors circulating on social media on Jan. 22 about the potential kidnapping of a Ledger executive. The rumors lacked concrete evidence until this confirmation.

On Jan. 22, former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao took to X to express concern over the situation without committing to any specific details and later deleted his tweet.

Zhao acknowledged rumors of a potential ransom scenario but admitted, “Not sure what is true for now.”

Jameson Lopp, chief technology officer and co-founder of Casa, a self-custody service, posted on X, referring to the situation as “unconfirmed rumors.”

“We have no reliable info on what has transpired, though Ledger’s silence makes my spidey sense tingle. I suspect that there is an ongoing incident involving an undisclosed person,” said Lopp.

Currently, Ledger’s baseline offerings — the Nano series — are the company’s best-selling product line. However, the company has also been focusing on offering high-end touchscreen devices, such as Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax, to users eyeing self-sovereignty and financial freedom.

As of 2024, Ledger had sold over seven million hardware wallets, none of which have ever been hacked, the company claims.

Pascal Gauthier, chairman and CEO of Ledger, said he was relieved and grateful following the release of David and his wife:

“We are deeply relieved that David and his wife have been released and are now safe. I have reached out to David, and our thoughts continue to be with him, his family, and the members of our team that worked with David while he was at Ledger.”

He expressed gratitude toward law enforcement for their swift action.

“Our top priority was always to allow law enforcement to do their jobs and protect the integrity of the investigation. We respected law enforcement requests around safeguarding critical details of the ongoing investigation and appreciated members of the press who did the same,” he added.

The co-founder of French crypto unicorn Ledger and his wife have been rescued after an outlandish Parisian kidnapping attempt resulted in 10 arrests.

David Balland and his wife were abducted in the early hours of Tuesday morning, they were separated and taken to different locations, according to Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau.

The kidnappers made contact with another co-founder of Ledger, demanding a ransom in cryptocurrency, part of which was paid to the assailants.

The GIGN, a special division of the French Gendarmerie military police, was enlisted to negotiate with the attackers, before tracking Balland’s location.

Police were able to recover Balland, while his wife was found hours later tied up in a van.

Almost all of the cryptocurrency used to pay part of the ransom has been traced, frozen, and seized.

Balland was hospitalized owing to a wound on his hand, Beccuau said, while his wife didn’t sustain physical injuries but will be monitored by medical staff owing to trauma.

The Parisian prosecutor said 10 people—nine men and one woman aged between 20 and 40—had been taken into custody relating to the kidnapping. Most were already known to police, she said.

Beccuau told media that the exchanging of a ransom, in addition to torture carried out during the kidnapping, dictates life imprisonment if those arrested are found guilty.

A representative for Ledger didn’t immediately respond to Fortune’s request for comment. However, Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier told the media: “We are deeply relieved that David and his wife have been released, and are now safe.”

“We’re grateful to law enforcement for their swift action,” he added, saying it was “a traumatic situation that we hope will never be repeated”.

Ledger was founded in 2014 and now employs more than 600 people across the globe. The group designs hardware that safely stores customers’ cryptocurrencies in a USB-style wallet. The company was valued at €1.3 billion in March 2023. Ledger recruited Apple’s iPod inventor, Tony Fadell, to join its board in November.

Balland and his wife’s kidnapping comes at a time when executive safety is firmly in the limelight, following the assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Murphy in December.

The kidnapping is also the latest in a spate of abductions linked to cryptocurrency. In November, Dean Skurka, the head of Canada’s largest crypto company, WonderFi, was kidnapped in Toronto by assailants demanding $1 million Canadian dollars in ransom. Skurka was dropped off on the side of a street after the ransom was paid.
