Russian Man Reports Alleged Kidnapping in Bali

Illustration.

BADUNG, Bali – A Russian man has reported to Bali Police that he was kidnapped, assaulted and forced to hand over access to his cryptocurrency accounts during an alleged 30-hour ordeal in southern Bali.

The 41-year-old victim, identified only by the initials AI, told investigators the incident began after he finished work at Hedonist Restaurant on the night of July 2.

According to Bali Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Ariasandy, the victim said a black vehicle blocked his path on Jalan Uluwatu at around 9:35 p.m. Two masked men then allegedly forced him into the vehicle.

“The two masked suspects handcuffed the victim using plastic restraints and covered his head,” Ariasandy said in a statement on Thursday.

The victim told police he was taken to a two-story building and held in a room that resembled a prison cell for about 30 hours. During that time, he alleged he was repeatedly punched and kicked while the suspects demanded the password to his cryptocurrency account.

Police said the suspects also allegedly took the victim’s mobile phone and the keys to his villa before entering the property and seizing another phone believed to contain credentials linked to his cryptocurrency account.

The victim said he was released near Udayana University Hospital on Jalan Prabu Udayana in Jimbaran at around 4 a.m. on July 4. He then sought treatment at the hospital’s emergency department.

“The victim was abandoned near Udayana Hospital and immediately received treatment at the emergency department,” Ariasandy said.

Police are still investigating the case. Officers are analyzing mobile phone location data and reviewing CCTV footage from the area where the alleged abduction took place.

“We are still investigating the case. We will provide updates as the investigation progresses,” Ariasandy said.

No arrests have been announced, and police have not identified any suspects. The victim’s account has not been independently verified.

Bali Crypto Nightmare: Russian Man Kidnapped and Tortured For 30 Hours

Bali police investigate a kidnapping that stripped a Russian of his crypto.

Two masked men seized the victim near Pecatu on July 2.

The case fits a rising global wave of crypto kidnappings.

A Russian national was reportedly kidnapped in Bali and held for nearly 30 hours until he surrendered access to his cryptocurrency account, according to local police.

Bali police are now investigating the case and hunting the perpetrators, who fled after dumping the victim outside a hospital.

The victim, identified only by the initials AI, was stopped near Pecatu in South Kuta on July 2 at about 9:35 p.m. Two masked men in a black Nissan Serena blocked his motorcycle as he left his restaurant.

The attackers handcuffed him with plastic restraints, covered his head, and drove him to a two-story building. Police say he was punched and kicked for roughly 30 hours until he handed over his account password.

The assailants also seized his Xiaomi phone. They then used his villa keys to enter his home and grab a second device linked to his wallet. The victim was released on July 4 outside Udayana University Hospital, where he sought emergency treatment.

Bali Police spokesman Senior Commissioner Ariasandy said investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and phone data across the crime scenes.

Crypto Holders Face Rising Wrench Attacks

The attack fits a widening global pattern of violent “wrench attacks” that target crypto holders in person rather than through hacking. France logged 77 crypto kidnappings and extortions since January 2026. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez unveiled a three-pillar security plan to counter the threat.

In the latest case, no arrests have been announced yet. Investigators are still assessing the stolen crypto and verifying the suspects’ identities.

Russian in Bali Kidnapped for 30 Hours, Forced to Hand Over US$ 5 Million Crypto Account

Crime, Hi-Tech, Personal Finance | July 11, 2026

Bali Update Editorial Team

KOMPAS and NusaBali report that a Russian, identified via an Instagram Interview as Artem Ivanov (41), has told Bali Police that he was kidnapped on Thursday, 02 July 2026, in South Kuta and held captive for 30 hours until he surrendered deposits held in his crypto asset accounts.

A spokesman for the Bali Police, Chief Senior Commissioner Ariasandy, confirmed the report of the crime, affirming a police hunt was underway for the alleged perpetrator. "Yes, we have received a report regarding the alleged kidnapping and extortion of a Russian citizen (with the initials) AI. The operational team in the field is currently gathering all evidence and clues to identify the perpetrators," said Ariasandy in a written statement on Thursday, 09 July 2026.

Based on the police report and a video recording on Instagram, the incident occurred on Thursday, 02 July 2026, at approximately 9:35 pm. At the time of his abduction, Ivanov was riding a motorcycle after leaving a restaurant where he worked. As he was passing Jalan Uluwatu-Jalan Belimbing in Pecatu, South Kuta, the Russian was stopped by his assailants, who were driving a black Nissan Serena. Two people wearing masks then got out of the car, handcuffed the victim's hands using plastic handcuffs, and covered his head. The victim was then taken to a two-story house and allegedly held for about 30 hours. During his detention, the victim claims he was assaulted, experiencing physical violence in the form of punches and kicks.

The kidnappers abused the man, forcing him to surrender passwords for his Crypto Asset Account. During the attack, the perpetrators also stole Xiaomi's Artem Ivanov's cellphone. In addition, the man's key to his rented villa was taken from his motorcycle. In possession of the Russian's villa keys, they used the keys to enter his home, where they took a second handphone in order to facilitate access to their victim's Crypto Asset Account.

After some 30 hours in captivity, on Saturday, 04 July 2026, at around 4:00 a.m., Ivanov was dumped on the roadside of Jalan Prabu Udayana, in front of Udayana University Hospital, Jimbaran. Badly beaten, the injured Russian went to the nearby Emergency Room (IGD) at Udayana University Hospital for medical treatment.

Police Investigate Four Locations

Ariasandy shared that police investigators had conducted crime scene investigations at four different locations and interviewed several witnesses. At the point where the man was stopped and at the time of his abduction, Jalan Uluwatu-Jalan Belimbing was relatively deserted, with few CCTV surveillance cameras in operation. Meanwhile, at the victim's villa, the CCTV system, electricity, and Wi-Fi network were reportedly malfunctioning due to a short circuit.

Investigators have, however, identified the vehicle allegedly used by the kidnappers as a black Nissan Serena. Moreover, Bali Police's Forensic Laboratory and Cyber Directorate Investigators are now tracking the victim's movements based on the electronic footprints (i.e., cell phone dumps) associated with the victim's active phone number.

According to Ariasandy, investigators are still analyzing digital evidence, including CCTV footage from the scene and along the route the perpetrators are suspected of taking. Commenting further, Ariasandy said: "The Bali Police will not tolerate any form of criminal activity, especially those targeting tourists or foreign nationals in Bali. We urge the public who see suspicious vehicles or activity at the time of the incident to immediately report details to the nearest police station."

Police initially became aware of the kidnapping when an associate of the victim, a fellow Russian national identified by the initials KK (37), notified the police on Saturday at 00:40 am that AI was missing.

Police are undertaking an extensive investigation of the incident, considering the case under the Indonesian criminal code (KUHP) as a kidnapping, physical assault, and armed robbery.

Police have yet to reveal if their manhunt for the perpetrator is focused on foreigners or Indonesian nationals as the suspected perpetrators. Police have yet to share the amount of money lost from Crypto Asset Accounts owned by AI.

The Interview on Instagram, however, identifies the kidnapping victim as Artem Ivanov and indicates his Crypto Asset Account was fleeced of US$5 million or about Rp. 90 billion.
