Toronto police arrest teens in string of bitcoin-related robberies
Victims willing to pay cash for the digital currency targetted, police allege

Toronto police have arrested three teenage boys and are looking for two to three others in a series of bitcoin robberies in north Scarborough.
Police allege the victims posted ads on Kijiji, offering to pay cash for the digital currency.
“As a result, the suspects contacted them and set up meetings or arrangements to sell their bitcoins, which they didn’t have,” Det. Sgt. Gerry Heaney said. “They end up communicating back and forth through email and text.”
The suspects robbed the victims of cash and other property during the meetings.
During the first robbery in February, the victim was also stabbed twice and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Three Scarborough males, ages 16 and 17, were arrested Friday night near Neilson Road and Finch Avenue in connection with three robberies.
Police are looking for two to three other teen suspects.
“People purchasing or trading in bitcoins should use extreme caution when meeting people,” Heaney said. “Meet in public areas and ensure that they’re not alone.”
