Gang assaults founder of social network Tuenti in his Madrid home in apparent attempt to steal bitcoin fortune
American entrepreneur Zaryn Dentzel told police he was in his apartment with a technician when the assailants forced their way in, injuring him in the chest in a bid to get hold of his passwords

A group of hooded assailants on Tuesday entered the Madrid home of the founder of social network Tuenti, Zaryn Dentzel, in an apparent bid to steal his bitcoin fortune. That’s according to the American entrepreneur himself, who reported the incident to police after they were called to his apartment. As was first reported by online Spanish daily El Español and later confirmed to EL PAÍS by police sources, Dentzel was left with a cut to his chest and was beaten by the criminal gang in a bid to obtain the passwords of his bank accounts and electronic wallets. The Tuenti founder is yet to file a formal report at a police station.

Dentzel, 38, made Spain his home in the mid-2000s, when he decided to create a social network in Spain for young people called Tuenti, after having spent time as a student in the Extremadura region learning Spanish during his university years. His social network ended up counting on millions of users and was acquired by Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica in 2010 for €70 million. He stayed at the helm of the company after the sale. In 2016 the social network itself was closed and Tuenti remained as a telecommunications operator.

According to the account recorded by police officers based on the victim’s testimony, he was in his home on Tuesday with a maintenance technician when the doorbell rang. He opened it to find “four or five” hooded men who covered up the security cameras with items of clothing as soon as they entered the property. They also covered his eyes and began to beat him, according to his account.

The incident began at around 3pm and lasted for several hours, according to Dentzel. After the assault, the gang left the house. Police were called by a neighbor who had heard shouts. Dentzel told officers that he had heard them take items with them but that he was unable at that moment to determine how many were missing or their value. The officers confirmed that the entrepreneur was left with a small wound on his chest.

The National Police in Madrid have taken charge of the investigation, which is ongoing and has so far not seen any arrests. The officers who were in the house took samples as well as statements and images that will allow for the facts of the case to be established.

The Tuenti founder divides his time between the Californian city of Santa Bárbara in the United States, and Madrid. He returned to Spain just a few weeks ago after spending a period in his home country. The property where the incident took place is located in Ruiz de Alarcón street, and is a penthouse apartment next to the Prado Museum with impressive views of Retiro Park.

The entrepreneur has been investing in bitcoin for several years and his fortune in this virtual currency could be worth millions of euros. As such, his accounts are likely to be protected with more levels of security than just a password.

Gang that kidnapped Tuenti founder in Madrid apartment sentenced to 9 years in prison

The Provincial Court of Madrid has sentenced the kidnappers of the founder of Tuenti to nine years in prison. The crime took place on November 2, 2021, when he was held and tortured in his Madrid apartment by a gang seeking to obtain 25 million euros in bitcoins from his digital wallet—though they failed to access the funds.

According to the court's ruling, the convicts were found guilty of belonging to a criminal group, illegal detention, robbery with violence and intimidation, use of weapons (in concurrence with illegal detention), and two minor counts of bodily harm. The sentence follows a plea agreement during the trial, which reduced the prosecutor’s original sentencing request from 20 years to nine years of prison.

After the proceedings, Dentzel expressed his desire to "move on" from what he called a "horrible event." He spent a year away from Spain after the ordeal, and now returns grateful to the police for their work.

Tied Up and Wrapped in a Carpet

The court findings detail that, sometime before November 2, 2021, the assailants conspired to illegally obtain 500 bitcoins (worth 25 million euros) kept in the digital wallet of the American-Spanish entrepreneur living in Madrid. Knowing that Zaryn (the victim) lived alone, they contacted him by pretending to be a friend of a friend to arrange a meeting at his home.

At about 15:35 on November 2, the four culprits arrived at the victim’s apartment. One rang the intercom while the other three waited out of sight. Upon entering, they executed their plan, armed with knives, pepper spray, two tasers, and metal handcuffs, and assaulted him.

They sprayed his eyes with pepper spray, covered his mouth, put a hood over his head, cuffed his hands behind his back, threw him to the floor, and wrapped him in a carpet. The attackers then took him to the bedroom, covered surveillance cameras, and turned the TV to maximum volume so neighbors wouldn’t hear his calls for help.

A maintenance technician, who happened to be in the apartment installing heating and was not part of the criminals’ plan, was also attacked: struck in the face, pepper-sprayed, zip-tied, and hooded, then dragged to the service room and tied to a chair.

The assailants moved Dentzel to the bedroom, where they sat him on a chair, hooded and bound, threatening him with death unless he handed over his phone and tablet, which they knew could access his bitcoin wallet. Under duress—including electric shocks with a taser and a knife wound from chest to navel—they demanded the access codes. They also threatened to dismember him, starting with his toes, unless he complied.

Dentzel gave up his phone, iPad, and the access code, but the criminals failed to access the wallet since a joint action with his manager was needed. They continued to threaten him, saying they would put him in a butcher’s van and take him to Toledo to be cut up over several days until they got the money.

Continued Threats and Theft

Throughout the ordeal, the gang demanded all valuable items and cash in the apartment, taking five Rolex watches (valued at 68,400 euros) and two bank cards. Unable to get the bitcoins, they fled around 19:10, leaving the victims tied up. The founder of Tuenti sustained two superficial cuts on his chest, injuries to both wrists and ankles, and abrasions on his lower back.

All four perpetrators have been detained since October 19, 2022, after their arrests.
