Surat: Cryptocurrency Deal Turns into Rs 2 Crore Dacoity
On Friday afternoon, a hoax call about an alleged armed robbery at an angadia firm opposite Varachha police station sent the police on a wild goose chase. The situation only became clear late on Saturday night when it was revealed to be a massive dacoity worth Rs 2 crore.
The incident occurred right under the police's nose, but the lack of any complaints initially led the cops to consider closing the case as a hoax call. However, the emergence of a Hyderabad-based victim at the police station changed everything. This victim, an auto parts businessman, filed a complaint of dacoity, finally piecing together the puzzle for the police.
Based on his complaint, Varachha police registered an offense of dacoity (IPC 395) against Pintoo Kumar Jha, Amit, Suman Singh, Madhukar, Rakesh, Raju, Vicky, Shahrukh, and several others.
According to the case details, Vinay Jain (29), a resident of Film Nagar in Hyderabad, told the Varachha police that he had come to Surat to invest in cryptocurrency. He had been lured by the accused but was instead looted of Rs 2 crore.
Two months prior, Jain had met Lakshminarayan in Hyderabad, who deals in cryptocurrency. Lakshminarayan lured Jain to invest in crypto for better returns and introduced him to P K Jha. After several meetings with Jha in Hyderabad, Jain, along with his brother Aakash, Lakshminarayan, and driver Shinu, drove to Surat in his father's Fortuner car on February 3. Before leaving, Jain deposited Rs 6 crore in an angadia firm, which he later collected in Surat. Jain claimed he had gathered the amount from his relatives to invest in crypto.
The next day, Vinay Jain and the three others reached the angadia firm, 'Shree Siddhi Vinayak Enterprise,' located at Central Bazar in Varachha, with Rs 2 crore to open his crypto account. Jha took the cash but did not transfer it to Jain's account. As Jha prepared to leave with the cash, Jain asked him to wait until the account showed the money. This led to an altercation, and around eight other people joined in, thrashing Jain and the others before disappearing with the money before the police arrived.
It was later revealed that the accused had planned to beat them up and steal the cash. Jain and the other three left the city after the incident and reached Mumbai. However, they decided to file a police complaint and returned to Surat on Saturday to do so.
