The note, which was sent to us Tuesday morning, demands a specific substantial amount of Bitcoin ... the amount is in the millions, and the note demands the cryptocurrency be sent to a specific Bitcoin address.

TMZ has verified the Bitcoin address is real.

||||

||||
There is a deadline connected to the alleged ransom ... and an element of "or else."

||||
|
||||

An alleged ransom note demanding Bitcoin has surfaced in the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, as authorities continue to treat the case as a suspected abduction.

||||
|
||||
The note, first reported by TMZ, is allegedly demanding “a large” Bitcoin payment in exchange for Guthrie’s release. The ransom note emailed to TMZ reportedly includes a deadline and an implied threat against Guthrie if the demand is not met.
|
||||
|
||||
“We have called the sheriff’s department. We’ve made multiple calls and spoken with the detective unit,” TMZ founder and host Harvey Levin said during a segment of TMZ Live. “We have passed on this email. We don’t know whether this is legit or not.”
|
||||
|
||||
Guthrie was last seen on the evening of January 31 at her home in the Catalina Foothills area of Arizona.
|
||||
|
||||
Authorities initially classified her as a missing vulnerable adult because of her age, before announcing on February 2 that the case was being treated as a “possible kidnapping” after investigators found what they described as “very concerning” evidence inside the home.
|
||||
|
||||
TMZ’s Levin said that media outlets receiving these types of ransoms are not uncommon and “happen from time to time.”
|
||||
|
||||
Law enforcement has not confirmed whether they believe the ransom note is actually from the kidnappers or a hoax to steal Bitcoin.
|
||||
|
||||
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment further when contacted by Decrypt, but pointed to a statement previously issued on social media.
|
||||
|
||||
“We are aware of reports circulating about possible ransom note(s) regarding the investigation into Nancy Guthrie,” the sheriff’s office wrote Tuesday on X. “We are taking all tips and leads very seriously. Anything that comes in goes directly to our detectives, who are coordinating with the FBI.”
|
||||
|
||||
While the authenticity of the ransom note has not been confirmed, TMZ executive producer and co-host Charles Latibeaudiere said the messaging included a real Bitcoin address.
|
||||
|
||||
“One thing we should say is that we have confirmed the Bitcoin address that they've included is legit,” he said. The note also included a description of what Guthrie was wearing at the time and a damaged item in the house, TMZ said.
|
||||
|
||||
Decrypt has reached out to TMZ to confirm the address's authenticity and will update this article should they respond. Representatives for Savannah Guthrie did not immediately respond to Decrypt's request for comment.
|
||||
|
||||
The use of Bitcoin in ransom demands dates back more than a decade, when early ransomware strains began demanding crypto payments to unlock encrypted files. The model later became widespread across cybercrime.
|
||||
|
||||
In recent years, that tactic has increasingly appeared in physical kidnapping, turning into so-called “wrench attacks” and extortion cases.
|
||||
|
||||
In April 2024, a Canadian family was tortured by assailants who demanded access to their crypto holdings. In November 2024, WonderFi CEO Dean Skurka was abducted in Toronto and released after a $720,000 ransom was paid.
|
||||
|
||||
Two months later, Ledger co-founder David Balland was kidnapped in France, which included a crypto ransom demand.
|
||||
|
||||
In the U.S., New York prosecutors in June of last year charged two men with kidnapping and torturing an Italian national for weeks in an alleged attempt to force access to his Bitcoin holdings.

Gruesome new details emerged Tuesday after the cable news network NewsNation reported finding a blood trail leading from the front door of the home of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie.

Nancy Guthrie was reported missing from Pima County, Arizona, at the end of January. Local authorities have described her as a “vulnerable adult” and have opened a criminal investigation into her disappearance.
|
||||
|
||||
As of Tuesday, she had not yet been found, and police were treating the case as potentially involving foul play. Authorities have also acknowledged they're aware of reports of possible "ransom" demands.

||||
|
||||
The Pima County sheriff's office has been reluctant to reveal too many details on why it feels Nancy Guthrie was "abducted," but the NewsNation report comes after TMZ reported receiving a ransom note containing Bitcoin demands and details about what Guthrie was wearing at the time, as well as items inside her home.
|
||||
|
||||
Shortly after that, NewsNation reported finding harrowing evidence at the home.
|
||||
|
||||
"NewsNation discovered a blood trail leading from the front door of Nancy Guthrie’s home Tuesday, the first visible evidence in the disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of 'Today' show co-host Savannah Guthrie," the report said. "The blood was visible outside the front entrance of the rural Tucson home after authorities cleared the crime scene and released the property to the family."

Previously, reports said investigators found blood inside the home as well. It wasn't immediately clear whose blood was inside the house. Officials said there were signs that someone had forced entry inside the home.

|
||||
The report noted that a Ring doorbell camera that was installed near the entrance had since disappeared. Investigators were looking into whether the kidnappers removed it.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Investigators found signs of forced entry at the Arizona home of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, a person familiar with the investigation said Tuesday, as the host asked for prayers to help bring back the 84-year-old, who is believed to have been taken against her will.

||||
The host described her mother, Nancy Guthrie, as “a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant” in a social media post late Monday. She asked supporters to “raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment. Bring her home.”
|
||||
|
||||
The Pima County sheriff and the Tucson FBI chief held a news conference Tuesday and urged the public to offer tips, but they revealed few new details about the investigation. The sheriff said they don’t have credible information indicating Guthrie’s disappearance was targeted.
|
||||
|
||||
Sheriff Chris Nanos has said Guthrie needs daily medication and could die without it. Asked whether officials were looking for her alive, he said, “We hope we are.”
|
||||
|
||||
DNA samples have been gathered and submitted for analysis as part of the investigation. “We’ve gotten some back, but nothing to indicate any suspects,” Nanos said.
|
||||
|
||||
The person who spoke to The Associated Press said investigators found specific evidence in the home showing there was a nighttime kidnapping. Several of Guthrie’s personal items, including her cellphone, wallet and car, were still there after she disappeared.
|
||||
|
||||
Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from nearby homes and working to analyze data from cellphone towers. Police are also reviewing information from license plate cameras in the area, according to the person, who was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the case and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.
|
||||
|
||||
The motive remains a mystery. Investigators do not believe at this point that the abduction was part of a robbery, home invasion or kidnapping-for-ransom plot, the person said.
|
||||
|
||||
TMZ reported Tuesday that it received a purported ransom note demanding payment in cryptocurrency for Guthrie’s release. Separately, a journalist with Tucson television station KOLD said in an X post that the station received what appears to be a ransom note. Both outlets said they turned over the notes to investigators.

||||
The sheriff’s department said it’s taking the possible ransom notes and other tips seriously but declined to comment further.

||||

President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday afternoon, said he planned to call Savannah Guthrie “later on” and called the situation “terrible.”

“I always got along very good with Savannah,” Trump said.

|
||||
For a second day, “Today” opened Tuesday with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, but Savannah Guthrie was not at the anchor’s desk. NBC Sports said Guthrie will not be covering the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics “as she focuses on being with her family during this difficult time.”

The “Today” host grew up in Tucson, graduated from the University of Arizona and previously worked as a reporter and anchor at Tucson television station KVOA.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday night at her home in the Tucson area, where she lived alone and was reported missing Sunday. Someone at her church called a family member to say she was not there, leading family to search her home and then call 911, Nanos said.
|
||||
|
||||
Guthrie has limited mobility, and officials do not believe she left on her own. Nanos said she is of sound mind.
|
||||
|
||||
In the hours after she disappeared, searchers used drones and dogs and were supported by volunteers and Border Patrol. The homicide team was also involved, Nanos said.

||||
|
||||
Guthrie’s home is in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in prickly pear and saguaro cactus.

|
||||
Savannah Guthrie’s parents settled in Tucson in the 1970s when she was a young child. The youngest of three siblings, she credits her mom with holding their family together after her father died of a heart attack at 49, when Savannah was just 16.

|
||||
“When my dad died, our family just hung onto each other for dear life because it was such a shock. We were just trying to figure out how to become a family of four when we’d always been a family of five,” she said on “Today” in 2017.

Nancy Guthrie raised them on her own. The host often brought her mother on “Today” as a guest.
