StellarCrowandClaude Fable 5.1 439e83a4cb feat(sources): Wayback pass, automatic trimming, detention rule, ten cases re-sourced
Second and third rounds on the dossier pipeline, reviewed locally before commit.

Retrieval
- wayback_pass.py: retries every BLOCKED/DEAD/THIN/ERROR linked source through
the Wayback Machine; blocks carry the snapshot date, archive URL and the live
verdict. 143 slots retried: 93 fetched, 37 no snapshot, 12 script shells, 1 PDF.
- fetch_sources.py: fetch_wayback() helper.
- add_extra_sources.py: files staged extra_* finds (web search, not on the DB
record) into the store with a provenance note.
- Cases re-sourced by web search: 248 (Oslo: Document.no, Avisa Oslo, NRK; the
linked Le Parisien piece is case 242 and is marked OFF-CASE), 258 Kharkiv,
  260 Singapore, 358 Bangkok, 365 Las Vegas, 388 Verneuil-sur-Seine, 390 Zoersel,
  430 Homestead. 341 of 364 cases now hold a fetched article; 11, 66 and 399
have no public text source (podcast, police video, direct victim report).

Trimming
- auto_trim.py: case-anchored furniture cut for UNTRIMMED blocks. Finds the body
run that mentions the case, merges across subheadings and short furniture
gaps, drops teasers, share bars, date/URL/caption lines and subscription
pitches; refuses pages with no record term or almost no body. 302 blocks
trimmed; 16 left on auto-trim-review.md (7 OFF-CASE suspects). Every cut is
labelled AUTO-TRIMMED, UNREVIEWED in the dossier; the full extract stays in
staging/. Decisions with anchors in trim-decisions-auto.json.
- build_cases.py / verify_all.py: banners for auto-trimmed and archived blocks,
staged-file check extended to Wayback blocks, flag legend under the record.

Detention rule
- README "Definitions": the DB field `kidnappings` is the DETENTION violence
type (victim, guard, staff or relative held to force submission or execute
the theft), distinct from the Kidnapping scenario (taken away and held).
- detention-flag-review.md / detention-flag-corrections.json: 40 records
reviewed with evidence; 30 set-to-1 proposals accepted by the owner on
  2026-09-06 (listed in corrections-approved.md), 10 still open.
- apply_detention_wording.py: "Violence Used" in the 70 reviewed summaries now
names detention explicitly (62 of 70 labelled), supported by the summary's
own text; idempotent; supersedes the batch scripts' wording.

Worklist and docs
- sofia-worklist.md: 248 decisions, detention rule item replacing the old
"no abduction" item, fresh-search section for the textless cases.
- README-START-HERE.md: progress notes, run commands, next steps.
- Bug fixed in passing: Wayback blocks stored in-memory text with carriage
returns; now stored as read back from disk.

verify_all.py PASSES (2321 checks).

The father of a crypto influencer was kidnapped on New Year's Eve.

On New Year's Eve, another crypto ransom kidnapping incident occurred. To target an influencer living in Dubai, criminals did not hesitate to kidnap his father, beat him, and pour gasoline on him. Are crimes targeting cryptocurrency holders on the rise?

A 50-year-old man found in the trunk of a car
On the night of January 1 to 2, members of the anti-crime brigade (BAC) noticed 2 hooded individuals in a car at a gas station near Le Mans, according to France Bleue Normandie.
When they intercepted the car, the 2 suspects fled. The BAC police then decided to inspect the vehicle and heard calls for help from the trunk. Inside, they discovered a 56-year-old man, tied up, beaten, and covered in gasoline.
The story goes back one day earlier and 500km away, on New Year's Eve in Saint-Genis-Pouilly (Ain). The man was then with his family celebrating the New Year. That's when 2 criminals broke into the home, tied up the woman and daughter before fleeing with the father.
Behind this sordid story lies yet another attempt at cryptocurrency-related extortion. The son of this family is a crypto influencer residing in Dubai. We all know influencers of this kind who are rampant on social networks: lavish lifestyle, luxury cars, and wads of cash. Enough to attract jealousy.
After kidnapping his father, the criminals contacted the son in Dubai to extort money. He immediately notified the police, who were able to free his sister and mother before finding his father 500km from his home in the trunk of a car, disoriented but out of danger. The 2 suspects are still at large at this time.
Crypto ransom demands, a rising phenomenon
Those working in this sector are even more targeted for kidnappings with ransom demands as cryptocurrencies are the subject of all fantasies. Moreover, criminals know that crypto can be transferred from one end of the world to the other: if they can't hijack luxury cars in Dubai, they can receive crypto on a wallet from France.

Attackers targeted the father of a Dubai-based crypto entrepreneur, police say.
Incident took place on December 31, 2024.
Youngest suspect was aged 16 at the time.
France remains in the grip of a crypto “wrench attack” pandemic. But police are fighting back, with investigators making five arrests after a social media influencers father was doused in petrol by a group of thugs — including at least one teenager — demanding ransom payments in crypto.
The unnamed influencers father was allegedly attacked on December 31, 2024, in Saint-Genis-Pouilly, in the Ain region near the French-Swiss border, French media outlet France 3 reported.
“The victim, a 56-year-old man, was violently assaulted, doused with petroleum, and forced into the trunk of a car, along with his partner,” a spokesperson for the French prosecution said.
The arrests come amidst a rise of so-called “wrench attacks.”
In the crypto community, the expression refers to physical assaults and kidnapping attempts whereby criminals try to force crypto holders to send them their coins.
Police have recorded at least seven such attacks so far in March, per data compiled by Jameson Lopp, the co-founder and chief security officer of the crypto wallet provider CasaHODL.
In recent days, police have closed the net on several suspects in multiple cases, with suspicions overseas masterminds have commissioned the attacks.
Man tortured for 16 hours in botched crypto kidnap attempt, say French authorities
French police have arrested three men in their twenties...French police have arrested three men in their twenties suspected of kidnapping and torturing a 74-year-old man in a bid to extort...
Police have arrested individuals in Angers and Île-de-France, as well as Épinal, in the Grand Est region.
Detectives said there was evidence of “a structured network” operating behind the scenes.
The latest arrests comes days after police in the outskirts of Paris mobilised 100 armed officers and two helicopters to track down two teens suspected of stealing jewellry from a female crypto holder.
The teens, and an older man, are also accused of attempting to break into another crypto holders house “armed with explosive devices.”
Police say the Saint-Genis-Pouilly attack took place just hours before the couple was due to celebrate the New Year in 2024.
Officers say the attack was carefully planned and carried out by individuals “already known to police and the courts.”
The youngest of the group was aged just 16 at the time of the alleged attack. The oldest was aged 42.
After kidnapping the man and his partner, the gang reportedly contacted their son, described as a Dubai-based influencer and crypto entrepreneur.
Police did not comment on whether or not the victims son paid the ransom the alleged kidnappers had demanded.
Detectives found the man near the city of Le Mans, some 700 kilometres from his home. They also found his partner tied up at the scene.
Prosecutors are set to charge all five suspects with kidnapping, unlawful confinement, extortion, organised crime, and aggravated violence.
Elsewhere in the county, another gang of would-be crypto robbers was reportedly thwarted by a burglar alarm.
Officers in Nantes reported several individuals tried to break into the house of the CEO of a Bitcoin-related company in the early hours of March 16.
After they triggered an alarm, the group allegedly fled the scene. Police say they are still searching for the suspected intruders.
