On December 31, 2024, the father, mother and sister of a French cryptocurrency influencer were kidnapped and held for several hours in eastern France – there too, a ransom was demanded. After the influencer raised the alarm, the gendarmes freed the mother and sister. Her father was found 24 hours after his abduction, 600 kilometers from home. Once again, it was a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle that led to the discovery of the man, who had been tied up, doused with petrol and locked in the boot of a vehicle. Pour ma part, l’histoire commence le mardi 21 janvier. Une source au sein d’un milieu police-justice à Paris me demande si je connais Ledger, et m’informe qu’un des patrons aurait été enlevé dans la journée. Si je n’avais jamais été en contact avec cette personne, j’avoue que j’aurais conclu à un fake, d’autant que je ne trouve pas la moindre trace en ligne. Mais avant de continuer la discussion, il me demande de n’évoquer l’affaire sous aucune forme que ce soit avant son dénouement.

À ce stade, et sans doute comme beaucoup, j’ai pensé au très médiatique Eric Larchevêque.

Parce qu’avant d’être jury sur M6 dans Qui Veut Être Mon Associé aux côtés d’Anthony Bourbon, qui a créé Blast pendant l’émission, avec Larchevêque comme égérie, et Tony Parker de la même émission, Larchevêque a surtout été entrepreneur.

En 2014, il crée avec Thomas France La Maison du Bitcoin, qui deviendra un CEX sous le nom de Coinhouse, parmi les tout premiers lieux physiques au monde où acheter du Bitcoin. En 2017, la plateforme, qui a donc changé de nom, rejoint « le groupe Arizen » selon les termes officiels abondement repris, sans que personne ne sache réellement ce qu’est vraiment ce « groupe ». Derrière Arizen, en réalité créé pour l’occasion, se trouve notamment Nicolas Louvet1, ancien partner chez Serena, qui a une longue expérience dans la tech et le VC, et qui est également l’un des tout premiers investisseurs de… Ledger. L’année suivante, Louvet obtient le statut de CIF2 auprès de la CNCIF3 et la fintech devient la première plateforme française régulée par l’AMF4. Deux mois plus tard, sous la pression de nombreux CIF qui se sont plaints auprès de l’AMF et de l’ACPR, la CNCIF fait marche arrière et retire l’agrément, expliquant que l’AMF interdit de ranger la crypto dans les « biens divers », et que donc, un vendeur de crypto-actifs ne pourrait pas être considéré comme CIF. Il faudrait attendre 2019 et la loi Pacte pour que le statut de PSAN5 apparaisse.

Quant à Ledger, c’est en réalité bien plus tôt, en 2011, que la société est créée sous le nom d’Epic Dream, par Larchevêque (95%) et Bruno L., même si l’activité réelle arrive bien plus tard. En 2012, Thomas France entre, puis en 2014, la société fusionne successivement avec Radioceros/ChronoCoin (Joël P., David Balland, Vanessa R.) puis BTChip (Nicolas Bacca, Cédric M., Olivier T.). Ce qui amène à créer ce qui sera le premier produit : le Ledger Nano, qui permet d’avoir un wallet physique pour sécuriser ses cryptos.

À ce moment, il y a donc 10 actionnaires principaux, dont les 8 cofondateurs, dont la plupart sont toujours partie prenante :

Eric Larchevêque : 32% - 12,% (au moment de la série C) - 170M€ (valo au moment de la série C)

Ledger commence alors de nombreux tours pour financer son produit et sa croissance, notamment en 20156 où l’ex-COO de Criteo Pascal Gauthier (qui a participé à l’IPO au Nasdaq de la startup) entre au capital et au board, puis 7M€ en 2017 lors d’un tour à 7M€ leadé par Maif Avenir7, puis 75M€ en 20188, ce qui permet de relocaliser la production dans une usine à 10M€, à Vierzon.

Le choix de la ville n’est pas un hasard. Larchevêque habite là, Joel P. n’est pas loin, Balland aussi.

En 2019, Ledger fait face à la chute du Bitcoin, ses ventes affichent -50% et l’entreprise doit licencier 10% des effectifs9. De plus en plus contesté, Larchevêque subit la fronde de son board, et notamment celle du DG qu’il a lui-même nommé pour l’épauler, Pascal Gauthier.

Le problème est en réalité plutôt classique : Ledger a levé beaucoup, a recruté cher, et le moindre hic dans la croissance fait que le burn devient complètement déconnecté du CA. Le produit est là, fonctionne, mais plus personne n’en veut, parce que le marché crypto s’effondre. La restructuration est actée et commence une guerre entre Gauthier et Larchevêque qui veulent se faire sortir l’un l’autre.

Larchevêque pense tirer sa légitimité du fait qu’il est cofondateur, Gauthier pense tirer sa légitimité de ses expériences, et surtout du board. Qui de toute façon a le dernier mot. En réalité, à ce moment précis, tout est déjà acté. Les errements de Larchevêque avaient déjà convaincu le board depuis un moment qu’il fallait le sortir, et plus personne ne croyait à sa vision. Alors que Gauthier, lui, est un fin connaisseur du système et de la politique, avait pris une grosse avance.

Les nombreuses levées font que Larchevêque n’est plus majoritaire et que le pacte d’associés ne lui donne plus de latitude, d’autant que ses cofondateurs ne le soutiennent pas vraiment non plus. Ce que résume un early-investor :

En 2021, la série C de Legder leadée par 10T10 affiche une valo à 1,5G$, suivie par une nouvelle levée à 100M€11 mais sur une valo de seulement 1,4G$ au Q1 2023. En tout cas, selon les chiffres annoncés dans la presse. Parce que selon des documents internes, les valos et les montants sont assez différents.

Au moment de la série C, 9’100 options sont accordées à Pascal Gauthier (8M€), et 4 cofondateurs cashoutent : Thomas France et David Balland (4,5M€), Joel P.12 (5,3M€), Cedric Mesnil (890K€). Les cofondateurs/employés détiennent alors 31% du capital.

Juste après la série D, l’entreprise doit supprimer à nouveau 12% des effectifs alors que le marché des cryptos est au plus bas. Mais elle s’affiche toujours régulièrement dans la presse spécialisée et grand public, à la fois comme une référence mondiale en crypto, mais également au sein de la French Tech.

Ce n’est donc pas pour rien que l’histoire du jour se déroule à Vierzon. Une grosse partie des cofondateurs n’a plus de rôle opérationnel, mais reste très liée à l’entreprise. Et entre eux. Si Louvet est toujours à la tête de Coinhouse, Larchevêque, comme on l’a vu, n’est ni dans l’un ni dans l’autre, et se consacre plutôt à sa propre image, vendant notamment ses conseils. Son passage sur M6 lui permet une belle exposition médiatique, qui, d’ailleurs, agace beaucoup de proches de l’entreprise qui l’accusent en off de refaire un peu l’histoire à sa sauce, notamment sur son rôle dans le succès et Ledger, et son départ. Un early-investor le qualifie même de « wannabe Niel », notamment lorsque je lui parle d’ALGOSUP, l’école de développement qu’il a cofondée à Vierzon, ou le B³ Village by CA, un incubateur de startups dans la même ville, porté par le Crédit Agricole.

Thomas France est lui resté au board, mais a quitté ses fonctions opérationnelles en 2019 pour se consacrer à ses activités de VC. Nicolas Bacca a lui quitté l’entreprise fin 2023 pour co-diriger Le Centre à Marseille avec Joël P.. Ils ont été rejoints par la très discrète Vanessa R., passée par le marketing et la communication de Ledger, puis par Orcel, le studio de David Balland qu’elle a quitté en 2024.

Mais tous sont très proches de cette petite ville de province (et les uns des autres) qui s’est donc agitée il y a quelques jours.

Le mardi 21 janvier, très tôt, plusieurs hommes armés entrent dans la propriété de David Balland et Amandine, sa compagne, située dans la banlieue sud de Vierzon. Méthodiques, les hommes séparent les époux et les embarquent. David Balland se dirige vers Châteauroux, à environ une heure de route, tandis que sa femme est retenue en banlieue sud de Paris, et est plusieurs fois déplacée.

Selon une source policière, l’objectif n’était probablement pas de soutirer des fonds à Balland, mais plutôt à ses proches professionnels. Attiré par les cryptos des fondateurs ? Par la valeur supposée et la richesse de Ledger ? Aucune idée, à ce stade.

À peine arrivé sur les lieux de séquestration, un des ravisseurs sectionne un des doigts de Balland, tandis qu’un autre filme la scène. Un premier message indiquant que Balland a été capturé est envoyé à Larchevêque. Puis il reçoit une atroce vidéo montrant la mutilation de Balland, avec un message exigeant un peu plus de 10M€ en Bitcoin.

Très rapidement, Larchevêque, sidéré, contacte les autorités. Le parquet de Bourges est saisi et ouvre une information judiciaire pour « enlèvement et séquestration en bande organisée pour obtenir l'exécution d'une condition ». L’affaire paraissant très sérieuse, il se dessaisit finalement au profit de la JIRS13 de Paris qui entame rapidement des négociations avec les ravisseurs. Dans le même temps, les sections de recherches de Bourges et de Paris sont saisies, ainsi que l’Unité nationale cyber de la Gendarmerie Nationale. Le GIGN de Tours, rejoint par celui de Versailles-Satory, se tient prêt à intervenir sur la zone.

Le nombre d’intervenants fait que l’information fuite dès le mardi après-midi. Localement d’abord, parce qu’un important déploiement de forces de l’ordre a lieu autour de la maison des victimes et dans Vierzon. Mais rapidement, plusieurs sources parisiennes évoquent le nom de Ledger, en demandant un silence absolu en échange de l’information. Presqu’immédiatement le lien Ledger/Vierzon est fait et le nom d’Eric Larchevêque circule à cause d’une mauvaise interprétation. Pourtant, les mêmes sources reviennent au front, à plusieurs reprises, demandant explicitement à plusieurs médias (dont Zero Bullshit), de ne pas ébruiter l’information.

Mais mardi soir, dans la nuit, Antoine Bailleron et Geoffroy Jeay du Berry Républicain14 décident de publier la nouvelle, également relayée dans L’Écho Républicain, visiblement avec l’aval du parquet local. À ce moment-là, ma source parisienne fulmine.

« C’est complètement dingue, et complètement inconscient. Depuis l’histoire de l’assaut de l’Hyper Cacher [Note de moi : où BFM TV avait révélé l’emplacement des personnes cachées] je pensais que plus personne n’oserait faire ça. Les journalistes ont carrément donné la ville de l’enlèvement, l’adresse d’une intervention, puis le nom de la victime. »

À titre personnel, j’avoue ne m’être même pas posé la question d’en parler, et à ce stade, au moins quatre rédactions qui avaient également l’information ont décidé de ne pas publier.

Ce n’est que quand l’information de la libération de David Balland et de sa compagne sera confirmée le jeudi un peu avant midi, que la plupart des médias publieront les articles déjà prêts.

Située un peu à l’écart du centre de Montierchaume, Le Cabaret Paisible, c’est le nom de la villa, appartient à un entrepreneur du Pays Basque qui l’a acquise il y a quelques années et l’a mise en gestion dans la conciergerie Galilé, qui opère surtout à Châteauroux et Vierzon. L’agence gère une cinquantaine de propriétés, principalement des résidences secondaires. Présente sur Airbnb, la villa a été louée par Aurélie B., la seule femme de la bande (pour le moment), pour 5 nuits. Puis elle a été investie le lundi via un système automatique de boîte à clé.

Le soir même, un homme est interpellé alors qu’il se rend dans la villa.

« C’est précisément pour ça qu’on ne voulait pas la moindre fuite. Si l’homme avait vu un article, il ne serait jamais revenu, indique une source parisienne. »

L’échec de l’opération (pour les ravisseurs), et sa désormais médiatisation, fait courir un risque élevé à Amandine, toujours introuvable. Le parquet ne communique évidemment pas sur l’information, mais une des deux adresses perquisitionnées à Vierzon (quai d’Yèvre, puis quai du Cher) est photographiée dans la presse locale. L’une est un bâtiment supposément abandonné, l’autre est la résidence principale officielle d’un des suspects.

Mais jeudi, une information liée à une exploitation d’un téléphone amène les enquêteurs à se pencher sur Étampes. Le GIGN est dépêché, et Amandine est finalement retrouvée ligotée dans une camionnette stationnée dans un parking du centre-ville. Vivante.

Six nouvelles personnes sont interpellées, déjà connues pour être liées au trafic de stupéfiants en région parisienne. Mais qui ne semblent toujours pas être les commanditaires.

Jeudi soir, le parquet de Paris fait une conférence de presse, alors que la suite de l’enquête a été confiée à la Junalco17 et remercie notamment les journalistes qui « ont bien voulu maintenir le silence sur les faits » dans un « souci de la préservation de la vie humaine ». Du côté de Ledger, aussi, on s’autorise à communiquer.

Larchevêque devait également s’exprimer dans La Grande Semaine sur M6 le 1er février18.

Quant à David Balland, il n’a pas trahi sa réputation d’homme au sens de l’humour exacerbé, et a mis à jour son compte Instagram personnel avec comme bio :

S’il est coutume de dire que personne ne paie de rançon, c’est en réalité toujours une posture, j’en avais déjà parlé ici. La vidéo amène immédiatement les enquêteurs, et les deux négociateurs en charge du dossier, à qualifier les ravisseurs de déterminés. L’autorisation est donc donnée de procéder à un paiement dès le premier jour.

À ce stade, l’enquête n’a pas encore permis de déterminer la raison du choix de la cible, mais la demande de rançon en crypto permet de comprendre un peu les motivations. Peut-être ont-ils cru que tout ça resterait anonyme et qu’ils n’auraient même pas besoin de blanchir les fonds.

Sauf que… quoi qu’on pense de Ledger ou des cryptos, ses fondateurs sont des gens particulièrement brillants, intelligents et experts dans leur domaine. Et notamment Nicolas Bacca, qui a oublié d’être con.

Larchevêque était d’accord pour contribuer, mais n’avait pas de liquidités rapidement disponibles. Un cadre dirigeant de Ledger accepte lui d’envoyer 400 ETH (1,2M€) pour calmer les ravisseurs. Plusieurs autres virements suivront, pour obtenir des preuves de vie, pour un montant total de près de 3M€, selon un proche du dossier, propos confirmés par d’autres19.

Mais Bacca se pose une autre question : comment faire en sorte que les fonds soient envoyés… mais puissent être gelés. Ce qu’il explique longuement à The Big Whale :20

« Mon objectif était de créer un dispositif prêt à être activé pour envoyer simultanément des demandes de gel à toutes les plateformes possibles en quelques minutes, et non en quelques heures. »

Une équipe se constitue autour de Bacca et de Sarah Compani d’Aleph Avocats21. Si le cabinet n’est pas vraiment une référence en matière de pénal, elles (les 3 associées sont des femmes) ont accompagné plusieurs acteurs de la crypto, notamment sur l’enregistrement PSAN, et conseillent notamment Consensys… ou Tether, dont le patron Paolo Ardoino va personnellement intervenir. La communauté SEAL 911 de Security Alliance est de la partie, et une bonne partie des exchanges sont mis dans la boucle. Plusieurs experts blockchain, dont un ex-développeur de SushiSwap, épaulent Bacca dans une boucle Telegram.

Dès le mardi soir, un des wallets des ravisseurs est blacklisté par USDT2223.

Une fois les 400 ETH reçus, la quasi totalité a été swappée en USDT via TrustWallet, plateforme totalement décentralisée, ne demandant pas de KYC. 210K USDT partent alors sur KuCoin, 112K USDT sur Binance, et 640K sur un autre wallet.

Compani, qui avait été alertée en amont par Bacca demande alors le gel aux plateformes. Selon un spécialiste de la conformité, vu les montants il y avait peu de chance que ça passe.

« KuCoin et Binance sont des plateformes avec KYC. Soit ils sont vraiment débiles, soit ils ne connaissent vraiment rien aux cryptos. Ou alors ils sont très malins et ont réussi à hacker des comptes qui ne sont pas à leur nom. »

Après quelques heures, tous ces fonds sont gelés et les commanditaires, particulièrement actifs, ne peuvent plus faire de mouvement. Une partie des fonds sont alors convertis en Solana, via MEXC et FexFloat24. 250 SOL sont alors à nouveau gelés très rapidement, grâce au travail de Compani, en lien direct avec le procureur, qui envoie les réquisitions à la chaîne aux plateformes.

Seuls 40 ETH (122K€) pourront être cashout vers un wallet dont l’activité semble indirectement localisée au Maroc. Quant aux fonds gelés, ils sont à ce stade saisis par la justice dans le cadre de l’enquête.

L’année dernière, Tether avait déjà gelé des fonds volés lors d’un exploit dans Ledger25.

L’enquête elle, ne fait que commence. La maison, qui était à vendre depuis six mois, et dont une promesse de vente devait être signée, a été placée sous scellés, le temps de l’enquête et notamment pour la police puis faire des relevés.

Valentin Simonnet, l’avocat du propriétaire, parle de « minimum 6 mois voire 2 ans avant d’accéder à [la] propriété »26, et va entamer une demande d’indemnité à l’État et à Booking, arguant que la carte bancaire utilisée n’était pas au nom de la locataire et qu’aucun contrôle n’avait été fait. Sous couvert d’anonymat, un cadre de Booking m’a indiqué que l’entreprise contesterait sa responsabilité, que son service juridique travaillait déjà sur le sujet, et que son assureur, Zurich Insurance Company Ltd, avait été prévenu.

« En tout état de cause, l’assurance responsabilité civile ne couvrira pas les dommages ni au propriétaire, ni à la victime. Quant à la garantie sur les dommages, elle exclue sans ambiguïté les activités criminelles, et le litige sera entre le propriétaire et le locataire, pleinement identifiable. »

The co-founder of French crypto unicorn Ledger and his wife have been rescued after an outlandish Parisian kidnapping attempt resulted in 10 arrests.

David Balland and his wife were abducted in the early hours of Tuesday morning, they were separated and taken to different locations, according to Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau.

The kidnappers made contact with another co-founder of Ledger, demanding a ransom in cryptocurrency, part of which was paid to the assailants.

The GIGN, a special division of the French Gendarmerie military police, was enlisted to negotiate with the attackers, before tracking Balland’s location.

Police were able to recover Balland, while his wife was found hours later tied up in a van.

Almost all of the cryptocurrency used to pay part of the ransom has been traced, frozen, and seized.

Balland was hospitalized owing to a wound on his hand, Beccuau said, while his wife didn’t sustain physical injuries but will be monitored by medical staff owing to trauma.

The Parisian prosecutor said 10 people—nine men and one woman aged between 20 and 40—had been taken into custody relating to the kidnapping. Most were already known to police, she said.

Beccuau told media that the exchanging of a ransom, in addition to torture carried out during the kidnapping, dictates life imprisonment if those arrested are found guilty.

A representative for Ledger didn’t immediately respond to Fortune’s request for comment. However, Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier told the media: “We are deeply relieved that David and his wife have been released, and are now safe.”

“We’re grateful to law enforcement for their swift action,” he added, saying it was “a traumatic situation that we hope will never be repeated”.

Ledger was founded in 2014 and now employs more than 600 people across the globe. The group designs hardware that safely stores customers’ cryptocurrencies in a USB-style wallet. The company was valued at €1.3 billion in March 2023. Ledger recruited Apple’s iPod inventor, Tony Fadell, to join its board in November.

Balland and his wife’s kidnapping comes at a time when executive safety is firmly in the limelight, following the assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Murphy in December.

The kidnapping is also the latest in a spate of abductions linked to cryptocurrency.In November, Dean Skurka, the head of Canada’s largest crypto company, WonderFi, was kidnapped in Toronto by assailants demanding $1 million Canadian dollars in ransom. Skurka was dropped off on the side of a street after the ransom was paid.
