Botched Bitcoin theft leaves long-time Kelowna deli out of commission
A long-time Kelowna business has been taken out of commission due to an attempted break-and-enter.
L&D Meats and Deli was not the original target of an early morning break-in today but was severely damaged nonetheless.
The target: a Bitcoin machine next door at Mikes Produce, was what the two suspects were after.
After breaking into the produce store, located at the Guisachan Village Centre, the two suspects allegedly tried to steal the machine, located against the back wall of the shop. A store employee explained that when they were unable to get it out, they fled, backing into L&D Meats and Deli and smashing through the front wall.
L&D Meats and Deli owner Don Favell said the timing for this couldnt have been much worse, as Thanksgiving is just around the corner and customers are expecting their pre-ordered meat. However, even though the deli no longer has a storefront, Favell assured that people will get their orders.
“They will get their turkeys,” he said.
Favell has been in operation since 1996, and besides being robbed in the first year he was open, hasnt had something like this happen since. Fortunately, Favell said the damages will be covered under insurance. For now, he said theyre focused on moving forward.
“Trying to get it up and running, thats all we can do, look after everybody,” he said.

A foiled attempt to steal a Bitcoin ATM early this morning (Oct. 7) left a Kelowna business heavily damaged.
Two suspects, sought by police, allegedly rammed a white GMC Sierra pick-up truck into the exterior entrance of the building in an attempt to gain entry.
Numerous attempts to ram the building caused heavy damage to the exterior, which according to Kelowna RCMP will cost thousands of dollars to repair. Police say the two suspects fled the scene in the pickup, leaving behind a tailgate.
The break-and-enter attempt took place just after 3 a.m. in the 2000-block of Gordon Drive.
“A preliminary assessment conducted by staff on-site, suggests that despite the thousands of dollars in damage caused, nothing appears to be taken from inside the business as the suspects were unsuccessful in taking the Bitcoin ATM,” said Cst. Solana Paré, spokesperson for the Kelowna RCMP. “Forensic investigators were called upon to examine the scene for physical evidence.”

Store Suffers From Collateral Damage In Bitcoin ATM Heist
hodler
A deli in Kelowna, British Columbia, was the unfortunate target of a Bitcoin ATM heist gone wrong. L&D Meats and Deli bore the brunt of the attempted theft despite having nothing to do with BTC or the machine.
Anatomy of a Failed Bitcoin ATM Heist
Here is how this unfortunate event unfolded about a week ago. This was right before Canadian Thanksgiving.
Thieves targeted a Bitcoin ATM at a produce store called Mikes Produce
Mikes Produce hosts a Bitcoin ATM
That ATM is apparently bolted to the wall
L&D Meats and Deli is the store right beside Mikes and it shares the wall where the Bitcoin ATM was placed with the produce store
The thieves approached Mikes at around 3 am on October 7th, 2020
They broke into the produce store to steal the BTC ATM, but failed to take the machine
As a result of their failure, the thieves understood that the ATM was right by the wall that the produce shop shares with L&D
That is when the thieves rammed their truck a GMC Sierra pickup truck into the deli
Their goal was to get to the ATM from the other side of the wall
The thieves ultimately failed to take the Bitcoin ATM, but the damage was done
Putting the Bitcoin ATM Heist into Context
It is important to get a more in-depth understanding of what happened here.
Firstly, it seems that L&D got hit at a critical point in time:
Canadian Thanksgiving is held on the second Monday in October
Just like their US neighbors, Canadians traditionally eat turkey on Thanksgiving
Being a meat shop, L&D Meats and Deli was getting ready to distribute the turkeys its customers had ordered
This is a great opportunity for delis and meat shops to enhance their revenue
Since 2020 has been a tough year for businesses due to the pandemic, Thanksgiving sales are especially important for delis this time around
Clearly this was a devastating blow for L&D Meats and Deli, as it must have been for Mikes Produce. But it is crucial to understand the Bitcoin angle here as well.
Bitcoin is not to Blame
Obviously, BTC is not to blame here. Bitcoin ATMs are an attractive target, but so is any other kind of ATM. Here is what you should keep in mind:
Covid-19 and government response to the pandemic, have worsened the economic conditions of millions of people
As a result, crime increased in general
On the other hand, Bitcoin ATMs might not even have any money in them; we doubt they have any private keys either
L&D Meats and Deli store front before the attempted Bitcoin ATM heist. L&D managed to distribute all the Thanksgiving turkey its customers ordered despite the destruction
Nevertheless, this might make businesses more apprehensive about the choice of ATMs they host. If Bitcoin ATM heists become more popular, it could also lead insurance companies to hike premiums on businesses that host them.

Bungled Bitcoin ATM theft in meatspace won't ruin Thanksgiving
Two thieves have destroyed the front wall of a deli in Canada after a failed attempt to steal a Bitcoin ATM.
A delicatessen in the Canadian town of Kelowna, British Colombia has been severely damaged after two bumbling crooks attempted to steal a Bitcoin ATM installed in a store adjacent to it.
At roughly 3am on October 7, the two suspects unsuccessfully attempted to steal the Bitcoin ATM located on the back wall of the neighbouring store. While attempting to flee empty-handed they backed their white GMC Sierra pick-up truck into L&D Meats and Deli and smashed its front wall.
The chance theyll be caught seems quite high, as local police noted that the thieves managed to leave their tailgate behind. Solana Paré, a spokesperson for Kelowna police stated:
“A preliminary assessment conducted by staff on-site, suggests that despite the thousands of dollars in damage caused, nothing appears to be taken from inside the business as the suspects were unsuccessful in taking the Bitcoin ATM.”
Given how inept the attempted theft was, you have to wonder if the criminals were hoping to steal the “Bitcoins inside the machine, or if they were after cash.
The delis owner Don Favell lamented the timing of the incident, noting that Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and his customers are expecting to receive pre-ordered meat before the holiday.
Favell said the damages will be covered by his insurance and that he is now focused on trying to get his business up and running again. He told local media: “Thats all we can do, look after everybody.”
“They will get their turkeys,” he vowed.
Bitcoin ATM theft does not appear to attract the most sophisticated of criminals. In November 201, two thieves broke into a grocery store in British Colombia to crack open a Bitcoin ATM installed inside. They stole $4,000 but accidentally left $50,000 behi.
