Operatives in Ternopil arrested a group who stole a car, deprived a man of his freedom, and extorted $800,000 from him
Illegal deprivation of liberty, extortion, and illegal seizure of a vehicle are three articles of the Ukrainian Criminal Code under which law enforcement officers in Ternopil charged several local residents.
According to Vitaliy Hatanyuk, Deputy Head of the Department for Investigating Especially Serious Crimes of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Ternopil region, the group held and tortured a man from the region overnight.
The man now lives in Kyiv and is involved in a cryptocurrency-related business. He had come to Ternopil with his wife to visit a relative for a birthday.
Around 7 p.m., as he was leaving Ternopil, a group of unknown persons blocked his way with three cars. They pulled him out of his car, handcuffed him, forced him into the trunk of a foreign car, and took his wife in another car in an unknown direction. The criminals also stole his Toyota Camry.
The victim himself reported the crime and his location early in the morning after a night of torture. The kidnappers did not find his second phone during a search. According to the victim, the kidnappers tortured him and threatened to kill him if he did not pay $800,000.
Operatives from the criminal investigation, investigators, patrol police, and the special KORD unit responded to the crime scene, but the criminals escaped.
Following quick action under procedural guidance from the Ternopil local prosecutors office, police arrested two of the seven suspects—a co-organizer and a perpetrator. They were placed in custody with bail set at 630,000 and 500,000 hryvnias respectively.
Another kidnapper was caught a day and a half after the crime. The organizer surrendered voluntarily. He is already facing criminal charges in court for drug trafficking as part of an organized crime group.
The whereabouts of three suspects remain unknown; one has reportedly crossed the border. The wife was found and had been held in a Ternopil hotel without physical violence.
The stolen vehicle was found a few kilometers from the crime scene.
All suspects have been charged under three articles of the Ukrainian Criminal Code:
Article 146 Illegal deprivation of liberty or kidnapping by prior conspiracy;
Article 189 Repeated or group extortion through conspiracy;
Article 289 Illegal seizure of a vehicle by an organized group or combined with violence dangerous to the victims life or health.
The investigation is ongoing.
