Latvian resident planned the murder of cryptocurrency owners for half a million euros
The State Police of Latvia prevented the kidnapping and murder of two people planned by a criminal aiming to obtain cryptocurrency valued at about 500,000 euros.
Law enforcement received information about the planned crime in September. They found out that a Riga resident was seeking criminal accomplices to carry out the kidnapping. The criminal intended to force the victims to transfer their cryptocurrency to a specified wallet and then kill them.
During surveillance of the organizer, operatives established that he was already tracking one victim, learning their routes and daily routines. The criminal also prepared torture tools intended to be used if the victim refused to provide passwords to their cryptocurrency wallets.
Police later learned that a similar kidnapping and murder plot was planned for another person. Through these two kidnappings, the organizer aimed to obtain cryptocurrency worth 500,000 euros.
He was detained on October 7 while waiting to abduct the victim. The suspect fully admitted his guilt.
He had previous convictions, including for fraud. The Riga resident was arrested by court order for the duration of the investigation.
Recall that in April, a Moscow court began examining the case of four defendants accused of attempting to kidnap and murder a city entrepreneur to extort bitcoins.

State Police prevented two murders related to cryptocurrency
Riga, October 22 — Sputnik. The State Police arrested a resident of Riga who planned to kidnap and kill two people to seize cryptocurrency belonging to them worth about half a million euros, according to the State Police website.
In September, officers from the 1st Department of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Main Criminal Police Directorate, as a result of operational work, intercepted information that a Riga resident born in 1989 planned to kidnap and then kill a person to illegally obtain his cryptocurrency. To carry out his plan, he actively sought someone in the criminal abroad environment to commit the crime.
A criminal case was initiated under Part 3 of Article 15 and Part 1 of Article 153 of the Criminal Law—on preparation for kidnapping.
During the investigation, evidence was obtained showing that the man monitored the victim, determining his routes and daily routine, after which he chose a place for kidnapping and a place to hold the victim for extortion of cryptocurrency. If the victim refused to voluntarily provide cryptocurrency wallet data, the man intended to torture him.
It was also revealed that similarly, the man planned to kidnap and kill another person involved in cryptocurrency transactions.
As a result of kidnapping and killing two people, the suspect planned to acquire cryptocurrency and cash totaling about 500,000 euros.
On October 7, the anti-terrorist squad "Omega" detained the crime organizer in the Teika district of Riga. The detainee fully confessed to planning the crime and was placed under arrest. The man had previous convictions, including fraud.
