A Brazilian owner and director of a digital bank in Recife (PE) was kidnapped by a criminal gang on March 10, 2021, losing 4.78 bitcoins after severe threats to his life. The case is under investigation by the Civil Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Pernambuco, which have charged ten people involved in the crime.

According to documents accessed by Livecoins, the victim suffered serious psychological problems, undergoing therapy and medical treatment, spending more than 100,000 reais to recover from the trauma.

The criminals were identified through investigation, and their assets, including luxury vehicles, were seized by police operations. The court ruled the ten identified criminals must jointly pay 250,000 reais for moral damages to the victim.

|
||
Investigations into the stolen bitcoins found no recoverable funds as the gang dispersed the amount across online platforms overseas.

||

||
All seized assets will be auctioned so their value is converted into fiat currency to be returned to the victim. On October 26, Pernambuco’s courts handed over the latest court decision documents to the prosecutor handling the case.

|

The Pernambuco Civil Police have indicted ten individuals in Brazil’s first known case of kidnapping where the ransom was requested in cryptocurrency. The target was a carefully chosen businessman in the financial sector who is a partner in a digital bank trading Bitcoin among other currencies. The crime took place on March 10 in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco.

The choice of kidnapping a businessman in the cryptocurrency sector relates closely to the kidnappers’ profile. The gang leader is a former intern at Caixa Econômica Federal, giving him experience in finance. To protect the victim’s safety, none of the names of the victim or kidnappers have been released.
|
||
|
||
The crime was committed in the Boa Viagem neighborhood along the Recife coast. The gang organized near the Excelsior business building, home to a fintech startup targeted in the crime.
|
||
|
||
“They demanded an absurd amount of cryptocurrency during the kidnapping and negotiated with the company’s partners and the victim’s family,” said Paulo Berenguer, head of Pernambuco’s Special Operations Group (GOE-DRACCO).
|
||
|
||
According to Berenguer, the kidnappers provided fake digital wallets to receive payment in bitcoins.
|
||
|
||
“They sell the cryptocurrency at below-market value and start trading this way. For example, if they got one million reais, they would resell it for 500,000 reais on the darknet,” he explained.
|
||
|
||
The investigator believes this is not the first crime of this type committed by the group. Investigators reviewed the kidnappers’ social media and found they lived lavish lifestyles. After this kidnapping, the gang purchased four luxury cars: a BMW 320i, a Range Rover Evoque, a Toyota Corolla, and a Ford EcoSport.

Berenguer said the victim’s family contacted the police only after the ransom was paid. However, he is confident the money will be recovered. The crime was uncovered on Thursday (May 27) based on traces left by the gang.
|
||
|
||
“The group made many mistakes during the kidnapping execution, and all suspects have been identified,” said Berenguer, noting that the rent payments were made via Pix, facilitating later tracking. The same applies to the vehicle rental used by the criminals.
|
||
|
||
Using GPS data from the cars, police tracked the suspects’ route and found them in a building in Boa Viagem. In the building, police discovered a gang from São Paulo had come to assist in the kidnapping.

||
|
||
Investigations also found that reception staff were paid 7,000 reais to help the kidnappers enter the building with the victim. One staff member provided insider information on the victim’s routine and vehicle.

||
|
||
“What caught the investigators’ attention was how easily the kidnappers gained access to the business building. The underground parking is reserved for residents, while the mezzanine floors above are for parking. There was significant facilitation. The second phase of the operation revealed that two security guards were bribed, after several meetings, to assist this action,” explained Berenguer.
