Police in Bali said that two Russian nationals were victims of breaking and entering and robbery at their villa in Badung last week.
The perpetrators, police said, forced the victims to part with their bitcoin, which was valued at US$284,399.
The incident became public knowledge after Yuri Boytsov, 27, claimed via his Instagram account @boutsov_life that four men broke into his residence on Feb. 25. Three of them reportedly spoke Russian, while one man who appears to be a local was wearing a police uniform.
The men threatened Boytsov and his girlfriend, Ekateryna Khmelenko, 27, before stealing their passports and other documents in addition to taking away Boytsovs valuable crypto assets.
Bali Police spokesman Stefanus Satake Bayu Setianto confirmed the incident, adding that the authorities received a report about it on Feb. 26.
A Russian national identified by his initials SMA was reportedly arrested that day at the Ngurah Rai International Airport, where he was going to take a flight to Dubai. The other three suspects are believed to still be at large.
Boytsov shared his story with a Russian news outlet. The police spokesman said that while he has every right to do so, they are concerned that it could actually hinder the investigation.
“We are still investigating,” said Bayu.

A popular investment blogger and cryptocurrency enthusiast, Yuri Boytsov, was attacked and robbed at his villa in Bali, according to reports. Four assailants, including an Indonesian man in a police uniform and two men of Caucasian appearance, reportedly stormed into Boytsovs villa and demanded access to his cryptocurrency wallets.

The attackers claimed that Boytsov had “ripped someone off” and demanded he transfers $284,000 in Bitcoin to their accounts. The attackers beat Boytsov and forced him to transfer the funds, which required verification with a picture of Boytsovs passport.
Local police have reportedly apprehended one suspect in the case, although he denies involvement and accuses Boytsov of being a fraudster. The incident highlights the growing risk of theft and fraud in the cryptocurrency space, particularly for high-profile investors and traders.
The Bali incident follows a series of recent cryptocurrency-related robberies in Russia, including the theft of video cards from a mining farm near Moscow and the robbery of a crypto trader selling stablecoins in the city. These incidents remind investors and traders to take appropriate security measures to protect their digital assets.
Cryptocurrency remains a lucrative target for criminals due to its decentralized nature and lack of regulation, making it difficult for authorities to track and recover stolen funds. As the value of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies continues to rise, investors and traders must remain vigilant and take steps to secure their holdings.
