On September 27, 2022, at 9:00 a.m., Pol. Col. Pongkajorn Sukkasang, Superintendent of Koh Samui Police Station in Surat Thani Province, revealed that on September 25, 2022, Pol. Lt. Col. Udomsak Thuppa, Investigating Officer, received a complaint from Mr. Evgenii Abdullin (31 years old, Russian nationality) and Mrs. Ekaterina Abdullin, a married couple. The couple reported that on September 15, while having coffee at a café in Taling Ngam, Koh Samui District, they were threatened and extorted by a group of six foreign men.

The suspects, six males of Russian, German, and Kazakh nationalities, surrounded the victims. One suspect, Mr. Salman Almaty (German), claimed to have previously met Mr. Evgenii in Russia and threatened the victims to transfer digital currency amounting to $3 million (equivalent to approximately 112 million baht). However, the victims only had approximately $58,000 in cryptocurrency (about 2.18 million baht), and fearing physical harm, transferred $50,000 (about 1.878 million baht) to the extortionists.

Salman Almaty left a phone number and warned that they would return for more money before the six men left the café; five left in a black van and one on a red Honda Click 125 motorcycle.

Mr. Evgenii stated that on September 16, while driving to a restaurant, he noticed being followed and quickly returned home. On September 18, he received a Telegram call asking if he had earned more cryptocurrency money and demanding more transfers via the Bybit platform. He did not comply due to lack of funds and consequently reported the matter to police out of fear.

Police investigations involving CCTV footage identified the black van and motorcycle used by the suspects. The license plates revealed the vehicles were rented from Pattaya, Chonburi Province. It is believed that the foreign gang left Koh Samui and are currently being pursued for questioning.

Pol. Col. Supparerk Phankosol, Superintendent of Surat Thani Immigration Police, stated that among the six suspects were two Kazakh nationals, two Germans, one Russian, and one unidentified. Salman Almaty exited Thailand at Suvarnabhumi Airport on September 18, and one Kazakh left on September 20, prior to the victims filing their complaint.
